Mr. Personality
Here’s something I really don’t get. Why do people think Bush is a charming, affable guy? I don’t think that comes across at all on camera. Whether or not you liked Reagan or Clinton, you understand that the camera loved them. They had stage presence.
I’ve known people who have met him in person and they claim he's a great guy. Most of us will never have a one-on-one with George W., so I don’t understand the attraction and I’ve tried.
You’d think the documentary JOURNEYS WITH GEORGE would give the best off the cuff presentation of him. Even though director Alexandra Peluso isn’t a card-carrying Republican, the director and subject genuinely seem to like each other and she doesn’t appear to be out to do a hatchet job.
It’s Bush on the campaign trail in 2000 and he does spend a lot of time with the press on tour buses and planes. Enough time that he couldn’t keep up his facade. I think you get some insight into the guy. I still found him a little cold, a little arrogant, even when he’s joking around.
Both FAHRENHEIT 9/11 and OUTFOXED offer footage of Bush before and/or after he’s performing on camera for interviews. FAHRENHEIT’s footage has been discussed ad nausea.
OUTFOXED also offers a pre-feed clip of Bush talking to a Fox interviewer, whose wife is involved one of Bush’s re-election campaigns in Texas. Bush is being friendly enough, but he still leaves me cold. And this is how he conducts himself with a fawning, partisan hack! Bush describes the man’s wife as “a good soul,” which, coming from someone of Bush’s beliefs, is a nice compliment. However, I found his delivery a little creepy.
I think that Karl Rove is right. You just need to keep repeating things and eventually most people will believe that they’re true.
Maybe the emperor has clothes, but he’s got no soul. Or, if he has one, it certainly isn’t a good one.
