Kerry & Iraq

John Kerry will not get us out of Iraq - certainly not any time soon.

I have a huge problem with Kerry because he voted for the resolution granting Bush authority to invade Iraq six months ahead of time. The only proviso was the president had to believe invasion was warranted. Bush already thought invasion was warranted. We all knew this. He was just letting Saddam dance his dance while we built up troop and munitions strength in the Middle East.

One of the main concessions the Bush administration wanted was to not have to go back to Congress again. Congress has the power to make war and Congress abdicated it’s authority - unconstitutionally handing over power to the Executive Branch.

I couldn’t believe they gave him the authority on the evidence. The evidence looked like crap to me. We were supposed to believe that there was more compelling top secret evidence, evidence Congress, certainly its intelligence committees had access to. We now know that it was crap, too.

(Just like Colin Powell’s presentation to the U.N. months after Congress handed the keys to the War Machine to Bush. The media hailed Powell’s presentation as brilliant and compelling, but it looked and sounded to me like a bunch of hearsay and stretched half-truths. Surprise! Surprise! We now know it was, but wasn't really obvious then? If the administration really had the goods on Saddam, they would have rammed it down our throats.)

I think Kerry voted for the war based on the political calculus that no one who voted against the war could successfully run for President in 2004. Kerry has said that if you believe he voted for that reason, you shouldn’t vote for him. Doesn’t leave you with a lot of options. (An Anger Presidency is looking better all the time, isn’t it?)

I think it leaves you with Alex Blevin’s excellent philosophical argument. John Kerry is a douchebag, but I’m voting for him anyway.
